Chapter Nineteen

Nathan

When we pass the Charlotte city limits sign, I let out a breath of relief. We’re one step closer to South Carolina, and I have to keep celebrating the small victories to keep myself sane. I glance over, Luna leaning back in her chair with her eyes closed.

I can’t help but thank a higher power for having her next to me now. Her ruby red hair is tied up in a high bun, her voluptuous breasts heaving from the plain turquoise tank top. Luna has stayed so strong for so long, and I want to prove to the woman that good times lay ahead.

I think we could both use one night with no stress. If we continue with the way things are, neither of us will have good enough mental health to survive once we reach Charleston. I read the upcoming sign, the fancy Roosevelt Hotel being advertised thirty miles up the road.

Maybe a night in paradise is the exact remedy the two of us need. I follow the directions to the resort, leaving the surprise for when Luna wakes up. I make sure to park a street over and pay the meter, hoping the diversion distracts Jack and Mitchell’s men from where we actually are.

Honestly, any logically minded person knows that two people on the run would be stupid to stop for an entire night at a luxury hotel, but maybe that’s the point. We outsmart the criminals by being stupid, something they wouldn’t expect.

When the car stops, I glance over and admire Luna’s peaceful state for one second before shaking her awake softly.

“How’d you sleep,” I ask, leaning over and placing a sweet kiss on her cheek. She offers a kind smile and nods her head.

“Pretty great, surprisingly. Where are we?” Luna answers promptly, a confused expression taking over her features. I can’t contain my excited smile, so I allow the grin to stretch from ear to ear.

“Take a walk with me,” I offer mysteriously, running around to Luna’s side and holding out my hand. The girl eyes the gesture curiously before placing hers in mine and stepping out of the car. I guide Luna across the street and through the parking lot, the large hotel coming into view shortly after. I glance over, Luna’s eyes lighting up when she sees the place for the first time.

“I don’t understand,” she says finally as we enter the lobby. I place another sweet kiss on her cheek and let my lips hover above her ear.

“I wanted to do something special for you. Let’s pretend we’re rich, just for the night,” I whisper. Luna lets a cute giggle escape before nodding her head and following me to the front desk. I tell the man that I need their best suite, hoping with everything in me that it’s available.

After typing for a while on his keyboard, he meets my stare and wears a kind smile.

“Well, it looks like we had a last minute cancellation. I could get you in right now if you want,” the man, who’s name tag reads James, informs me.
